U.S. Denounces Iran's Irresponsible Missile Attacks in Northern Iraq

Iran's bold move to launch ballistic missiles against the Iraqi city of Irbil on Monday night has elicited sharp condemnation from the United States and Iraq, escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The US State Department promptly denounced Iran's actions, labeling them as "reckless and imprecise" attacks. Tensions have risen in the region following the eruption of conflict between Israel and the Iranian-backed Palestinian group Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for the strikes, asserting that they targeted an alleged "Israeli spy headquarters" within Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region. However, the Kurdistan Region Security Council flatly denied these allegations, accusing the Revolutionary Guards of repeatedly using unfounded pretexts to attack Irbil.

The strikes resulted in tragic consequences, leading to the deaths of four civilians and injuries to six others, according to local authorities. In response, Iraq promptly recalled its ambassador from Tehran and condemned the attacks as a "blatant violation" of its sovereignty, vowing to "take all legal measures against it."

The Kurdistan Region's Prime Minister, Masrour Barzani, labeled the incident as a "cowardly attack" and urged the federal government in Baghdad to "take a principled position against the flagrant violation of Iraq's and the Kurdistan Region's sovereignty."

Amidst heightened tensions, Kurdish counter-terrorism forces engaged in a separate incident on Tuesday morning, shooting down three armed drones flying over Irbil's airport, where US and international forces are stationed. While no immediate claim of responsibility emerged, an umbrella group of Iran-backed militias known as the Islamic Resistance in Iraq has been linked to similar attacks.

Iran's provocations come amidst heightened tensions across the Middle East, following the outbreak of the Gaza Strip conflict. Iran has expressed no desire for broader involvement in the conflict, yet groups within its "Axis of Resistance" have carried out attacks against Israel and its allies in solidarity with the Palestinians.

Hezbollah, a Lebanese group backed by Iran, has engaged in cross-border fire with Israeli forces. Meanwhile, Shia militias have launched drones and missiles at US positions in Iraq and Syria. Yemen's Houthi rebels, also backed by Iran, have targeted ships sailing in the Red Sea.

In response, Israel has conducted strikes resulting in the deaths of a Hamas leader in Lebanon and a Revolutionary Guards commander in Syria. The US has also taken action, killing an Iraqi militia leader in an air strike and bombing Houthi targets in Yemen.

The escalating violence has drawn international attention, with the Kurdistan Region Security Council reporting that multiple ballistic missiles struck civilian-populated areas of Irbil, causing extensive damage. The Iraqi foreign ministry also condemned the aggression and announced the formation of an investigative committee to expose the falsity of Iran's claims.

As the situation in the Middle East remains tense and unstable, the international community watches closely, urging restraint and diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict.
